A leading contribution to the relations between history and the social sciences, this work was written at the start of the 20th century as the various social science disciplines attempted to constitute and define themselves as sciences, not without a certain competition. Charles Seignobos discusses the contributions and differences between the social sciences while recalling the specificity of the historical method. Published in 1901, this text provoked foundational debates in the social sciences, notably initiating François Simiand's critique of a history qualified as "historizing" (1903). Reading this work nevertheless leads to rediscovering, as Antoine Prost invites us in his unpublished preface, "the breadth, modernity and importance" of the epistemology of the history of Seignobos, far from all the positivist caricatures, and giving a large place to the subjectivism of interpretation.

In recent years, social scientists have engaged in a deep debate over the methods appropriate to their research. Their long reliance on passive observational collection of information has been challenged by proponents of experimental methods designed to precisely infer causal effects through active intervention in the social world. Some scholars claim that field experiments represent a new gold standard and the best way forward, while others insist that these methods carry inherent inconsistencies, limitations, or ethical dilemmas that observational approaches do not. This unique collection of essays by the most influential figures on every side of this debate reveals its most important stakes and will provide useful guidance to students and scholars in many disciplines.

The Introduction to historical studies constitutes the reference text of what has been called the French “historical methodical school”. This manual seeks to define the rules of the historical method in order to help establish the scientific nature of a discipline, history, in the context of its university professionalization. The text affirms the primacy of archives as evidence and sources of the historical narrative, and looks back on the different stages of work on archives, from the location to the interpretation of documents. Both praised and criticized, this text remains undeniably modern and deserves to appear on the bedside tables of all apprentice researchers in the social sciences. We are happy to make it accessible in an edition enriched by a preface by Gérard Noiriel.

While there are many books available on statistical analysis of data from experiments, there is significantly less available on the design, development, and actual conduct of the experiments. Laboratory Experiments in the Social Sciences summarizes how to design and conduct scientifically sound experiments, be they from surveys, interviews, observations, or experimental methods. The book encompasses how to collect reliable data, the appropriate uses of different methods, and how to avoid or resolve common problems in experimental research. Case study examples illustrate how multiple

This book refines the discursive theory of democratization by juxtaposing the elite and lay discourses in post-Soviet Russia (1996-2008). Through examining how Russians position themselves as political subjects, the analysis demonstrates that Russians rarely identify as true democrats.
